Ted NCVB 3Armed Forces Reunions, Inc. was founded in 1988 by Ted Dey, after a five year stint directing the nation’s first military reunion marketing campaign for the Convention & Visitors Bureau in Norfolk, Virginia. Ted wrote and the Bureau published a manual on how to organize and plan a military reunion from start to finish. In a clever takeoff on the TV series “Mission Impossible,” the Norfolk CVB titled its campaign “Mission Possible: Operation Norfolk.” The effort was hugely successful and it wasn’t long before cities nationwide launched marketing campaigns modeled on Norfolk’s program. Norfolk literally booked hundreds of reunions from all the service branches. There were two things Ted noticed in working with groups: 1) they were not receiving a high level of service elsewhere in the country and 2) groups had to rely on inexperienced volunteers to host the annual reunions. In 1988 Ted set out to fix this with the incorporation of Armed Forces Reunions – the first company dedicated to planning military reunions coast to coast.

In 1989 AFR planned 23 reunions from San Diego and Reno to Norfolk and Jacksonville. The number of military reunions planned in 1991 exceeded 100. To date we have planned thousands of reunions in 147 cities nationwide. AFR now has five levels of staffing to ensure a successful military reunion for each of our groups. There are two seasonal staffs: one for assembling registration packets and the other for on-site reunion management.
